Surgical Services for Pets

We prioritize your pet's comfort and care from surgery to recovery.

It's natural for pet owners to worry when their loyal companion has surgery. There are many risks associated with surgery, and recovery can be tedious. At our hospital, we understand this more than anyone else, which is why we offer our unwavering support. Our veterinarians are experienced in safely performing procedures and ensuring pet owners fully understand the ins and outs of the surgery.

How can I prepare my pet for surgery?

Your veterinarian may provide specific preparations based on the type of surgery your pet has or if your pet has known health issues. The general guidelines to follow before surgery are:

  1. Withhold food or water by midnight before the day of surgery
  2. Keep your pet's vaccines up-to-date

If you have questions about your pet's upcoming procedure, don't hesitate to call us at 250-376-6797.

What happens during surgery?

We perform pre-anesthetic blood work with all surgeries to detect health issues that could cause your pet to react to anesthesia. In some cases, our team will perform additional testing like ultrasounds and X-rays to learn more about your pet's health.

During surgery, we do everything to ensure that the patient is comfortable. We administer a  short-acting anesthetic that puts your pet to sleep. We monitor your pet's blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen level as they help us detect any problems early so we can stabilize them. Your pet is also given intravenous fluids to promote blood circulation and prevent low blood pressure while under anesthesia. Our veterinarians work with precision during surgery and use advanced techniques that allow your pet to recover faster.

How can I care for my pet during recovery?

The recovery period for your pet can be tricky if they don't get the care they need. Our team will always provide you with pain management and instructions on how to help your pet post-op. If you have additional questions, don't hesitate to reach out to us. Here are some tips on how to care for your pet during recovery:

  • Give them their medication on time
  • Encourage them to eat so that they can regain their strength
  • Ensure your pet doesn't scratch or lick their incision
  • Allow your pet to rest after surgery. Ask your veterinarian when it's safe for them to be active again.
