Parasite Control & Prevention

Protecting your pet against internal and external parasites.

At Tranquille Road Animal Hospital, we know the damage parasites can inflict on pets, which is why we encourage using preventative measures. It's not just ticks and fleas that can harm your pet. They can become infected with coccidia, heartworms, ear mites, hookworms, tapeworms, and roundworms, which can be fatal if left untreated or result in conditions like Rabies and Lyme disease. Get your pet started on a parasite prevention plan today. Reach out to us at 250-376-6797.

How can I protect my pet from parasites?

Your pet needs to be on a year-round prevention plan for adequate protection. Parasites can attack at any time, depending on your pet's lifestyle. It is better to prevent a parasite infection than to treat one. Our team will work with pet parents to create a program that can give their pet ultimate protection. Our prevention program usually includes regular testing to detect parasites and preventatives to repel them.

What are signs my pet has parasites?

The symptoms may not be visible depending on the type of parasite your pet has. External parasites like fleas, ticks, and mites will be easier to notice than internal parasites. Sometimes your pet can go months without showing signs of an infection. With regular testing, your veterinarian can diagnose and treat your pet promptly before the parasites cause life-long damage. Here are some tell-tale signs of parasites:

  • Sudden weight loss
  • Hair loss
  • Vomiting
  • Red bumps
  • Protruding lumps
  • Itching and scratching
  • Persistent coughing
  • Diarrhea

Can I get parasites from my pet?

Yes, unfortunately, some parasites are zoonotic. Zoonotic insects and diseases can be passed between species (i.e., from animals to humans). Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms can be passed on to humans. To protect yourself from catching parasites from your pet, please practice good hand washing hygiene, especially after handling your pet's stool, and ensure their waste is disposed of properly.
